Hosting Jargon

Disk Space – The amount of space required on the server to host your website.
No. of pages Average Page size Disk Space Required
Bandwidth  – refers to the amount of visitors (traffic) your website can handle monthly.
No. of vistors Page views per visitor Bandwidth Required
5 (x2MB)

Ensuring your webpages are optimised so they don’t use more data than necessary, is a key consideration when developing a website. With a typical page size of 2MB, your 100 page site would only need 200MB. The actual amount of storage you’ll need the server will also need to account for databases, back-ups, large files such as video content and hi-res photos and if required, content that is downloadable from your site.

The amount of bandwidth you need will depend mainly on the amount of traffic you expect to visit your website. Every time a visitor views a page of your website it uses bandwidth. In the example above , 1000 visitors each view 5 pages of your website using 10GB of bandwidth.

Many hosting companies will make the website unavailable a soon as you have used up your bandwidth. The first time you exceed your limit we’ll let you know but it will remain active. If it looks like you’ll be consistently exceeding your monthly quota we’ll suggest upgrading your hosting package. You don’t have to upgrade, but your website won’t be visible online after you have used up your quota each month. Anyone trying to visit your site will get page telling them the site is currently unavailable. The more popular your site becomes the more bandwidth you’ll use.
